Nice blender tutorial there.

There are a handful of blender tips that you received in this post comments. Maybe you should make a mini-screencast summarizing all these tips. Or maybe just summarize them at this blog post text.

By the way, a few more here:
1. As you already know, "W -> Remove doubles" is usually a good idea.
2. For moving the 3D cursor, you can also try the Shift+S key. It opens a very interesting menu.
3. You can open/close the "Transform" panel by pressing N.
4. You can click on "Draw normals" button to actually see where the normals are pointing. It becomes more useful in case the "Recalculate normals" doesn't work.
5. I think you could start from a Cylinder, instead from a Circle, and then extrude/cut. Probably, this way, the normals would be okay and wouldn't need to be recalculated.
6. Not sure if it would work okay in this bottle, but for other cases you have "W -> Bevel", or "Modifier -> Bevel". It might be useful a few times.
7. Middle-click on a file at the "Open file" or "Load image" will open it. So, instead of left-click and then click at the top-right button, you can just middle-click.
8. Another very important tip is to give names to (all) your objects. While it's not needed for such simple scene with only one or two objects, the names become more important when you have many objects. You can change the object name at the Object (F7) or Editing (F9) panels. Likewise, you should also give names to Materials.

About the texture, I bet there are tons of different ways of doing that, including some not using an "external" object. Anyway, I probably would have tried UV-mapping for the textures.

Yep.. I'm pretty much on board with what Hx has said. However I was wanting to do a screencast on font creation, but I definitely was going to use Fontforge. ;) It's the only way I've done it before. I didn't realize that it didn't work on Windows. I thought it was cross platform. Anyway, I will have a look at it but can't guarantee anything.

I'm completely swamped as of late. I am aiming to get something done for 101 or 102, but still trying to find time to develop an idea into something.

Boy.. this episode sure has it's fair share of comments. You'd almost think we made the big time!

Thank-you for the suggestion but I have a major lack of interest for making my own fonts in Inkscape or any other program. It's just not my thing. Unless Richard is interested you'll probably never see a tutorial on the subject here. :( I think it's great that Inkscape has some font capabilities but those features are lost on me. If other how-to sites wish to cover it then I would be glad to link to it on our blog.

We always welcome viewer ideas for future screencasts. Those ideas do compete with our own ideas from time-to-time so it makes getting to them difficult. I keep a reference list of things I might be interested in covering but I would never commit myself to covering every single idea...not even my own ideas. My mood changes often. I might be interested in something one day and not the next. That's why I'm careful not to make promises. I'm sorry but Richard and I take a pretty casual approach to these screencasts. We do what we can when we can do it. :)

At some point perhaps we can add a suggestion box but until then everyone is free to email us. Just go to the contact link in the above navigation bar.

Sorry this is not about the current episode, but a wish for a future episode (maybe the 101th? :) )

Currently there is no freeware for creating new fonts on Windows. (The only freeware -FontForge- is not available as an installer for windows: We must install certain modules of cygwin first, which is a headache by itself. So most users would not know how to install it.)

So how about an episode that (a) describes the concept (b) leads the viewer through planning a new font, (c) shows how to create a glyph with InkScape, (d) show how to save the ttf with a freeware (preferably open source application, but not fontforge, which is an uphill task on Windows)

Creating a font is mostly making glyphs as vector diagrams and then saving as different characters of a set to make up a new font. So InkScape should be ideally suited for that!

This may not sound like a big deal, because a huge number of fonts are already available for English. But it is great idea for languages which have hardly 2-3 fonts. (e.g. most Indian languages).

Thanks in advance!

****
BTW there should be a capture page for viewers' wishes, and the accepted wishes should be listed so people know what's coming, and suggest even more topics after going through that list.

Nice bottle, I like every tutorial who is interacting Inkscape with any other program. May be in the next tut. you will use Inkscape to make a PNG image with alpha channel to make some interesting rendering in Blender.
Regards screencasters.

Thanks so much for taking the time to teach an old dog like me some new tricks. I look forward to every one of your screencasts, and this one hundredth was no exception. I'd like to give back a little though, and pass along a Blender tip that I've found very helpful. I admit, I've got a terrible habit of moving the 3D cursor all over the place, and usually not because I wanted to. I found that a simple SHIFT-C moves it back to the origin. Nothing mind numbing, but sometimes the little things make all the difference in the world.

Thanks again!

I thoroughly enjoyed this. I had downloaded blender some time ago and found it too difficult to get my head around. I am just becoming proficient and comfortable with Inkscape, but you have given me the nudge to try blender. Rest assured I still have you on my reading list so I will not be too much a stranger here too.

Thank you so much for the time and effort in doing the tut. I loved it!

Hi,

WOW, thank you for the hundredth screencast, i have seen them all and learned so much about Inkscape:-))

I wish, i would have such a great natural talent as you, to explain a "special" UI such Blender so easy, that everyone can understand it. You should consider, to make more screencasts with Blender involved. It would be a GREAT enrichment to the Blender community.

Many thanks from Cologne (Germany).

BTW: Inkscape 0.47 RTM is now running nice on my new and first (little) mac mini. I love it :-))

For the newbie viewers-

Heathenx has used a 3-point lighting for the scene, which is worth a separate look.

http://www.3drender.com/light/3point.html
http://www.mediacollege.com/lighting/three-point/
http://www.andrew-whitehurst.net/3point.html

And there is a 4-point lighting also-
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three-point_lighting

BTW some people use "Cool" (bluish) light for the main lamp, and a "warmer" (yellow/red-ish) light for the fill lamp. These shades should be subtle.

I know -- I was only being "a bit" facetious. For some reason, I've always felt intimidated by the interface. Many *cough* many moons ago, I got pretty good with Caligari's TruSpace but it's been a while since I ventured into 3D space.

@Zombie

Blender isn't THAT hard.. sheesh! The next release will have massive updates and you might want to wait it out.. or you can follow up on your bravery and try to learn it. Blender isn't the focus here.. but I'd be willing to help where I can. The sites Heathen listed are great as well as blenderunderground.com of which I am on "staff".

Here's my take on this screencast:

Amazing screencast!

I was brave enough to install Blender -- tried to get some simple text on a canvas and extrude it a bit... ended up in the corner of the room in the fetal position looking for my blankie... I think I need some of those pills you conjured.

I'm realizing that if it ain't in a menu, my feeble brain is not strong enough to memorize all those key combination or go hunting through a panel of panels of panels superimposed unto a composite of panels hidding behind other panels in a panoply of panels. I feel like Dr Seus I am.

I applaud your skill, bravery and talent... of which I have none... :-)

Ah! Extrude half way. That seems to work. Thanks for that.

Yes, I know that I can set smooth in edit and object mode. It's probably better that I do it in edit mode though. Eliminates a step, I guess. I'm glad you pointed that out because I didn't mention it in the screencast.
