Episode 082 – Vector Tennis Ball

by heathenx

In this episode I will take an excellent tutorial of a vector tennis ball provided to me by Christian of Chrisdesign and recreate that in Inkscape 0.46.

Thank-you, Christian, for providing me with an excellent topic for a screencast. :) Be sure to check out Chrisdesign blog for some excellent Inkscape tutorials.  I believe Christian will be adding other sports related tutorials to go along with this one so be sure to check out his website often. I have seen some amazing stuff coming from this guy. He’s an exceptional artist.

Grab the Viper Nora font and tennis ball palette if you wish to play along.

    Another nice collection of concepts and techniques. Thanks for pointing out the various shortcuts such as reversing the circular gradient. Thanks also for showing alternative ways of doing things such as rotating about a moved centrpoint.

    Great Tut,
    Getting texture (fuzz) on the ball was sort of amazing. ;-)
    BTW, what about putting the logo in the center of the ball,
    and the text above and below it on the same path as the lines?
    Sort of curved.

  4. Chrisdesign Says:

    Hey Heathenx ! Thank you for recording this idea. I believe you watchers will like it.
    Inkscape is Rock`n`Roll ! :-)

    @Don W

    The sky’s the limit. Do whatcha want. :)

    @Chrisdesign

    Thank-YOU. The tennis ball was very clever. ;)

  6. Bill Lowden Says:

    Great tutorial! I’m becoming obsessed with Inkscape and your tutorials. I just can’t miss them.

  7. neon g Says:

    Thank you very much Chrisdesign and of course heathenx. The fibres in particular look great :)

    Does anyone know of a good way too distress (I think that’s the right term) something in Inkscape? Basically I want my logo to have the same “worn and torn” look as the font – any ideas?

  8. heathenx Says:

    @neon g

    There are probably several ways to “distress” something in Inkscape. In release 0.47, which is still being developed, there is a rubber stamp effect. However, I would check out Nicu’s tutorial on the rubber stamp effect. http://howto.nicubunu.ro/rubber_stamp_inkscape

  9. neon g Says:

    Thanks heathenx, that’s exactly what I wanted :D

    This tut reminded me of an old SNL skit… a bit long but one of the best skits EVAR! http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=l9BqNOjPJxw

    Great job Chris,
    The tutorial is really good.

  12. Paul C Says:

    You amazed me with the seams. Then when you made the spiral I was all \"???\" It turned out amazing. Thanks! and thanks to Chrisdesign too!

  13. Ross T Says:

    Hi guys – This was a fantastic tutorial – the fibre effect in particular was fantastic. I’ve been using your tutorials for a couple of months now with a class of Multimedia students (all girls, 15-16 years old) and they’ve been really engaged with the stuff you’ve done.

    Cheers

  14. heathenx Says:

    @Ross T

    We’re glad that you and your students are finding our tutorials useful. :)

  15. Grey Says:

    Thanks so much for this tutorial. I’m particularly grateful for discovering the outline view mode. This has really saved me on a recent project with lots of blur.

  16. Val Says:

    Hi

    This is a great tutorial, thank you for screencasting it.

    I am really new to Inkscape and have downloaded the 0.47 version.

    Could you please tell me how to add nodes in this version as there is no Effects menu in this version.

    Ciao

  17. Richard Querin Says:

    Val – In 0.47 you would go use: Extensions->Modify Path->Add Nodes

    You will find most of the same menu items (and plenty more) under that menu item.

    Hope that helps.

    RQ

  18. heathenx Says:

    @Val

    You can also select your object with the node tool and use Shift+I. Do that a few times and before you know it you’ll have a billion nodes. :)

  19. Val Says:

    Thanks for the heads up.

    I cant get that fuzz going as I have two sets of settings in Modify/Add Nodes
    and two sets of settings in Modify/Jitter.

    I have tried all sorts of combinations but end up with far to much fuzz or separated fuzz down the middle of the ball.
