Episode 073 – License Plate
by heathenx
In this screencast I will take a stab at creating a vector license plate in Inkscape 0.46.
PSHERO.com once again gets the credit for this screencast. Once I saw his tutorial I immediately made one of my own just to see if I could do it. I’ll try not to duplicate his tutorials too often out of respect for him and his tutorial site…but dog gone it!…his tutorials are so fun to follow. It’s his fault.
Thank-you for the inspiration, PSHERO.

Once again you’ve done an incredible job. Thank you.
But at the moment the flash video does not work. Every time I try to watch it I get an error message.

@Caedus,
I can confirm that you’re right about the flash file. I’m pretty sure Heathenx is on the case about this. You can still download the avi file if you right-click/saveAs on the little ‘video AVI’ tag at the bottom of the post. I’m sure the flash problem will be fixed in fairly short order.
Sorry ’bout that.

So sorry everyone. I am running into permission problems with the files on our ftp server. If I do not chmod them correctly then no one has access to the videos/html even though the files are there. Not sure why I’m having trouble lately.
Should be fixed now…I think.

If you guys are looking for something a little more unique you should try using the axonometric grid and the 3D Boxes tool to make a picture like in one of those Lego instruction books. I was able to get some nice looking results pretty quickly.
I have a picture of it so let’s all hope this link works…

@Bill
Nice work.
I fiddled with legos in Inkscape awhile back. I used this site as reference. They are somewhat easy to model and fun to fool around with. Maybe we should screencast this eventually.

Very interesting tutorial. It is possible to create in Inkscape something like http://pshero.com/archives/old-world-wax-seal ?

@ JomaAsbrink This is one of mine after seeing the pshero, really easy.
This may take you there.

@JomaAsbrink
Well, mine is far from perfect. Still needs some fixing but maybe you can take it from here. I used a filter.

PS. The above file will not look so good in most browsers. Filters do not render well.
Rendered version here:

I gave this a try too. I didn’t use any filters, just ole-fashioned circles, offsets, blurs etc. I did use Tiled clones though so I feel quite proud of myself.

How did we get from a License Plate to lego and wax seals? I did some Lego with Blender as well…

I have just discovered inksape and vector graphics and must say your tutorials were an absolute godsend. Many thanks for taking the time and effort to share your knowledge ( and other peoples) in such a clear and precise way. I have only been using inkscape for a week and already have had friends ask if i can provide art work for them. I will try and post what i come up with. Again many thanks and keep up the good work.

Richard, there is no “little ‘video AVI’ tag” for Episode 073….
I know this is older material now, do you guys intend to post an AVI of it?

Fixed. Sorry about that. For some reason we keep having problems with this episode.
In case it happens again you can find it in our video repo: http://screencasters-repo.heathenx.org
