   Hi there, I feel stupid for asking this, but I’m getting frustrated. I’ve had great success in the last two days with your tutorials and I am very thankful for your contribution to the Inkscape community. However, I am completely unable to create a bezier path that ends up with sections like yours does. Mine ends up with a few open areas on the edges and a blob in the middle. Am I missing something? Is there a setting I’m missing somewhere? Like I said, I feel goofy asking this question, but I’m stuck!

   @Chris – I assume you’re *not* closing the bezier path at the end right? With this method I create the spider web path but it’s left open at the end (so it’s not a closed path and therefore has no fill). The shapes only get created when I select the bezier path and the background rectangle and then select Path->Difference. Is that when you’re getting the blob in the middle?

   Also, when you create the path, make sure you keep going in one direction around the rectangle (in the screencast I go counter clockwise for the spider cracks and counter clockwise for the spiral ending to it). It could change things if you go in different directions for each (although I’m not entirely sure of that).

   Check those two things and leave a comment on how you make out. If you can, post a picture of what you are getting so maybe we can figure out the problem. Thanks.

   thanks for the quick reply.

   Sorry I wasn’t clear. I was not closing the path. As you can see at this link, when I did the path->difference I ended up with an ugly blank spot in the middle of the image. I spent a foolish amount of time (mainly out of stubbornness) trying to replicate exactly what you did on the tutorial, but it was all for naught. I know I’m probably missing something really simple, but I’m stuck.

   This is weird. I tried mimicking your path as best I could and when I selected Path->Difference the first time I got what you got. Then I hit ctrl-Z to undo and did it again and it worked out fine. Hmm. I can’t seem to recreate the problem now. Anyway, I also tried Path->Intersection and got a very similar result so you could either try doing the ctrl-z thing or try using Intersection instead of Difference. This is strange. Here’s my example let us know how you make out:

   Alright, I tried again, and it worked. I literally spent 2.5 hours last night trying to get that effect to work to no avail. I didn’t change a thing since this morning’s effort, and now it works great. I’ve tried to replicate the issue I was having and can’t. I’ve drawn counter-clockwise, clockwise, both directions, etc, and all have had the desired results. I’m not sure what happened, but I appreciate your help either way. Here’s my proof that it’s working now.

   hi there.
   Thanks a lot Mr. Querin 4 ur informative and productive tutorials. really worth your time and efforts.

   for the tutorial #32, i also got the same problem as Chris had. but i couldnt quite find out what went wrong. Spent quite lotsa time but still couldnt work it out. got frustrated here and there a bit. am gonna keep trying tho =)

   btw, i’m using version 0.47.

   hi there again.

   i’ve tried this tutorial using inkscape 0.45 instead. It worked wonders! yay!

   so, i supposed i wouldn’t work in inkscape 0.47 as the result would be somewhat funny.

   I’m sure it will work in 0.47. You’ll just have to take some different steps to get the same result. Of course, I haven’t tried it myself yet in 0.47 so I’m not quite sure what has changed.

   i’m not that shrewd to figure out how to make the shattered glass effect works in the version 0.47 =(

    i just opened my email and read your reply.
    here i attached the url of the end result of shattered glass effect when i used the difference boolean operation on both inkscape version 0.45 and 0.47.

    It’s all about how you draw your path with the pen tool. Richard has you going around in one direction which works just fine in 0.45. However, in 0.47 you have to randomize the path and in both directions, clockwise and counter-clockwise. Give it a try using that method and it should work for you. At least it does for me.
