@Don W
I think we have a fix for the choppy intro...at least on current episodes. I just transcoded more than half of our total episodes into OGG/theora format last night. Those particular videos won't be as clear regarding quality as future episodes but at least they are just about equal to the present AVI's...and a little smaller in file size.

I used the latest ffmpeg SVN to convert the AVI's. We'll use ffmpeg2theora on any new episodes unless we come up with a better solution. Sadly, I don't see mencoder in our future unless they add theora support.

Is it possible the intro audio could have used too much bandwidth?
Just a thought.

There ARE streaming servers that would help us but no, we intend for OGG files to play like our flash files do now. Things won't be perfect at first and we'll have to learn as we go but we're up for the challenge.

At this point we're going to encode our Microsodes first since there aren't many and the re-encoding time is quicker. We would love to get feedback and even advice if you can offer any. ;)

Did you happen to experiment with any live streaming? How hard did it look to get that all the way through to the browser?

Awesome! We had great discussions about the upcoming ogg/theora/vorbis world domination in NYC over the weekend at http://openvideoconference.org - it's going to be sweet.

The ogg vs ogv/oga/ogx file extension thing is a policy around retaining backwards compatibility for some hardware players that expect .ogg files to be Vorbis I audio, with no video track. See http://wiki.xiph.org/index.php/MIME_Types_and_File_Extensions
