Episodes Page Outage
March 31st, 2009 by heathenxOur episodes page was temporarily down for some time today. Sorry for that. We’re not sure what actually happened though. Host Gator was able to restore things back to March 29th, the date of our last backup. Unfortunately, we lost a few user comments but nothing major. Everything seems to be back to normal.
Thank-you, Host Gator.

well done on the backups, it’s always nice to know that they work when they are needed.
One slight problem with the episodes page’s. It’s impossible to comment on them at the moment – the CAPTCHA doesn’t seem to be showing up, and it is rather hard to guess the right code

@tomh
Ah, you’re right. Looks like simple-captcha is broken on wordpress 2.7.1. That means it gets the boot. I wonder if that is what broke our database…if that’s possible. I have removed it for the time being but we’ll have to add something similar and simple back sometime soon to counter the spam. Thanks for the head-up.

@HX– On the CAPTCHA, any chance getting one that us slightly colorblind old farts can read?

just a quick note to say that you may want to look into the anti-spam stuff again, as quite a few comments are coming up with very simplistic comments and spam links in the website field… take a look at the last few comments on episode 28 as an example ;-<

Thanks, tomh.
Been busy with other things that I have taken my eye off the ball a bit. I’ve deleted the comments on episode 028 but I’m sure there are more elsewhere. As soon as I can I’ll try to get a new captcha up soon. They’re a pain in the ass for commenters but they sure do help us administer things better.
Tip for others: Always hover over a link and look at your status bar first before clicking it. Any domain with a .info is suspect as far as I’m concerned.

And here I was thinking you were deleting all those single line spam comments. Maybe I should actually get off my arse and do something around here.

@Richard Querin
Ha!…and I thought you were being a “silent” owner.
I haven’t researched captcha’s for WordPress in a while. Perhaps there are some good ones that we can try.
