Possible Grid Masking Photo Project?
July 14th, 2008 by rfquerinI stumbled upon (literally) this site over lunch today: http://www.blockposters.com/. It got me thinking about a possible photo project.
The aforementioned site provides a way of recreating large format posters using small printable sections. But what about this…
I was thinking about using a similar grid mask to that used in Screencaster’s Episode 064. Essentially a grid of say, 9 rounded rectangles. I would take a nice image that I like and and do the grid masking and then print each individual section onto its own piece of photo paper. I would then somehow mount each piece to a backing and mount them on the wall (maintaining the spacing between rectangles of course).
I think this would be a neat effect. However I’m a bit unsure about what do about the photo mounting. Is it possible (and not overly expensive) to get these things done onto something like foamcore by a printing shop? I think it would work best with each individual piece mounted framelessly to the wall.
But of course there might be other, equally good (and maybe easier) ways to do it. I’d be interested in anybody’s suggestions.

Maybe printing the whole grid of images to one piece of foamcore and cutting them out (carefully!). ?? Dunno. Thinking out loud here.

I would get it printed in one piece. I do not like these cuts and it is not that expensive (unless you need a really large poster, let’s say more than 1 or 2 m2). I have no experience with foamcore, though. I would fix the poster afterwards to a piece of hard board or frame it.

Hi! I’ve done something similar with my “scrapbooking” projects/supplies. Never a poster - great idea!
If you’re going to cut them apart and use no frame why not print them all out separately and then mount them on 12×12 styrofoam boards/sheets yourself? The look is NOW and a great way to display your work.
1″ thick styrofoam is less expensive than the foamcore or hard board and easy to work with.
Print each individual picture 12×12 or whatever size you desire.
If you can’t find the correct size styrofoam sheets/boards buy large and cut to size.
Paint 1″ sides with black (or desired color) paint or cover with 1″ paper, wide ribbon, metal strip or whatever.
Using craft glue or Mod Podge (craft section at Wally World) adhere photos to styrofoam boards.
Add a hook (hardware section at Wally World) to the back of each with craft glue and/or craft pins and hang up your art work in desired grid..
This is high end art/decor design used by office/home decor designers.
Great idea - would love to see your finished work.

Thanks for the great suggestions. I’m trying right now to figure out which photo to “cut up”. I would love to do a portrait type of photo (I’ve got several good ones I’ve taken of my daughter), but I worry about where the face will lie etc. Maybe a landscape or sunset photo would work better. I’ll probably do it on a smaller scale. Something like 24″x24″ out of 6″ squares just to test out the concept.
I’ll definitely post about it once I do it.
