The Flip Video camera and some sample video
May 17th, 2008 by rfquerinNot to hijack this blog for my own evil purposes or anything, but I’ve posted a mini-review of my new Flip Video camera along with some sample videos to check out. I posted 2 downloadable versions (original avi from the camera and an h264 encoded avi) along with a full size streaming flash version.
So if anyone out there is interested in a cheap video camera (circa $130.00) that shoots pretty good quality 640×480 30fps video, you might want to check it out right here.

This IS your blog too. I’m the one hijacking it with donut pictures.
I posted a comment on your blog post. I thought the video looked pretty good. I was impressed. What kind of mencoder script did you use to convert the original video?
Hey, we all love seeing how cute your daughter is but when will we get footage of your dog doing back flips in the backyard?

I actually used a slightly modified version of one of the scripts I (we) use for the screencast videos. I took the one I normally use to convert the original screencast ogg file into an h264 video with b-frames. I modified it so the input file is the avi from the camcorder and I removed the reference to the scaling and the fps setting assuming it would then match whatever fps and size the input file was. Seemed to work. I’m still bloody impressed with the filesize reduction.
I’m thinking I’ll likely post the script I used to create the h264 version in the comments on my blog post.
As far as my dog goes, he’s about 14 now and his back hips are not great. Would you settle on backyard footage of someone throwing a 9-pin bowling ball into my crotch? I could maybe do that…
