Possible Downtime Coming
February 4th, 2008 by heathenxWe have switched web hosting companies. We have gone from Aplus.net (which I love and will miss) to Host Gator. We’re not sure if this will be a temporary change or something long term. We’ll have to monitor our growth which remains small but steadily climbing to see what will be our next step in the future.
After reading several reviews and weighing the good and the bad we settled with Host Gator. Hopefully they will be a good fit for us. They have offices in Texas and Toronto in case you are interested. Also, I have been on the horn and on the live chat with sales and support a few times already. They were very quick to respond (even on the weekend).
This post should serve as a sort of warning. I haven’t switched over to Host Gator’s DNS yet but when I do things might be a little flaky with the entire heathenx.org domain. Yes, that includes the Screencasters. Host Gator tells me that the change-over might take anywhere between 24-72 hours for the servers all over the world to propagate. [Cue the waving flags and national anthems]
Please, we ask for your patience.
Thank-you

Update:
So far so good!
Everything seems to be rolling over quite nicely. So far I am really enjoying Host Gator. There are plenty of things to configure but I’m working my way through them. One of things that I wasn’t able to figure out was my inbox. I had about 36MB of email sitting in my email inbox over at Aplus. Switching over to Host Gator was like starting from scratch with email. I must have misunderstood tech support because I thought all of my mail would transfer over. Can’t believe that I was that naive. Of course it doesn’t get pulled over (numb nuts moment). It doesn’t look like I can get to it anymore either over at Aplus. However, I have every single one of those emails sitting in my inbox in Thunderbird. I guess not all is lost.

One thing you may want to consider for the future is to keep the DNS registrar/provider separate from the hosting provider. That way you are free to change hosting provider at any time, without being at their mercy; simply change the DNS settings at the DNS provider’s site and wait until the changes are propagated (between a few minutes and a few hours).
There are a number of valid DNS providers out there; for the past eight years I’ve been a very happy easydns.com customer. Their prices may be above what some others charge, but their support is fast, very kind, and knowledgeable.
Good luck with your new provider, and thanks for your great tutorials, I enjoy and appreciate them!

@fleaslob
Yup. Already on top of that. My domain is registered with GoDaddy and has been for some time. Perhaps that’s why it transfered so smoothly. Good tip.
