Episode 048 – Firefox Personas
December 20th, 2007 by heathenx![]()
I had an opportunity to make a screencast last night. I actually thought that my last screencast was going to be my only screencast for December. The kids were being extra quiet so like a ninja I slipped away, put on my headphones and hit the record button. Since I wasn’t planning on recording, this screencast was a little off the cuff. Although, I think it serves it’s purpose.
Episode 048 is just a quick and dirty demonstration on how to make a custom Firefox Personas header image. Firefox Personas is a new Firefox Add-On that lets you choose or make a custom header (and footer) image. I didn’t want to take the time and make a proper header because it wasn’t necessary. Designing a header is up to you. I just wanted to show you how to get started.
Firefox Personas is still new so perhaps some of the features will change in time.
I hope you enjoy it.

Hmm…
Could be a number of things. Have you checked out the persona forums? I haven’t had any trouble with it so far but I haven’t really experimented with things too heavily.
Have a look here:

…Also…some are using jpg’s instead of png’s. I suppose you could try one or the other.

hi. I enjoyed and found your screencast useful but im having a bit of a problem. I use the dimensions that you call for..200hx3000w in inkscape, but when i import it into the firefox browser i cant seem to get any of my artwork to fit. My creation is there , but i cant see what ive made. Its either off center or i cant see it at all. If im using a solid color or a simple gradient it looks ok. Its only when i start adding artwork is when i start having problems. Is there any other dimensions that i should try? Thanks for the great screencasts…very helpful for someone like me just getting started in inkscape

If you are seeing your image in Firefox then you are doing things correctly. It really does take some trial and error to get your graphic right.
Have you tried dragging and dropping the personas template png into Inkscape and placing it on top of your custom graphic to get a sense of where things need to be placed? (Cripes! That was a long question…)
Go to this forum post (below) and download both header and footer templates (even though the footer does not word yet). The header template should help you get a handle on things.

Thank you sir for the timely response. Im at work right now and will try this when i get home. Again, the image looked fine if i just used a color and a gradevarient, but when i added a graphic of some sort it didnt look the same in the browser as it did inside inkscape itself. And sometimes the image was way off that it wasnt in the header at all. You really provide a good service here, and the screencasts are amazingly helpful. I look forward to trying your advice

No problem, dude. We’re all friends here. Personas isn’t fully baked yet. Keep a sharp eye because they are working on some updates.
Thanks for the kind words…especially after I just door-dinged your car.
